Steelers open camp with Roethlisberger under center

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened camp this morning and as reported via Twitter, Ben Roethlisberger took the first snap under center. This might have simply been a symbolic gesture, but if Byron “The Human Windmill” Leftwich is going to be running the show, he is going to need all the practice he can get. Trust me, I watched him when he played for the Buccaneers last season.
Steelers reportedly sign OT Flozell Adams

Sources are reporting this evening that the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran OT Flozell Adams. Jason LaCanfora and Jay Glazer have both reported the signing, though I’ve seen nothing official from the Steelers as of yet.
Adams had been released by the Dallas Cowboys this offseason and was brought in by the Steelers last month but wasn’t signed at that time. It was speculated at that time, Adams’ asking price was too high but perhaps if that was the case, Flozell might have re-thought his position and wanted to get on board with a team right from the opening of camp.

NFL Network has reported that the wife of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher has passed away. Cowher’s wife, Kaye 54, had been battling skin cancer. The Cowhers have three daughters; Megan, Lauren and Lindsay.
Services will be held in North Carolina on Monday. Steelers fans everywhere will keep the Cowhers in their thoughts and prayers.
Dennis Dixon disappointed with Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers backup QB Dennis Dixon is disappointed that he isn’t getting more time with the Steelers 1st team offense. Dixon’s agent, Jeff Sperbeck speaking in a phone interview to Pittsbugh media said, “I think Dennis should be given the opportunity to start. He’s been there going on three years. He knows the offense. He’s familiar with his teammates. He’s ready to go”.
Sperbeck continued, “I don’t understand why after Byron’s been gone a year, they would bring him back and start him ahead of Dennis. To me, it should have been Dennis’ job as the No. 1. He was No. 2 last year. Byron was not even in the picture”.
Okay I do agree with Dixon’s agent to a degree. Leftwich has been named the tentative starter for the Steelers during Ben Roethlisbergers’ suspension. Leftwich is not going to give the Steelers the best opportunity to win games. He is a statue in the backfield, his windup is painfully slow to watch, and over the past few years, has generated too many turnovers. Where I disagree with Sperbeck is that Dixon should not be simply handed the job. Dixon is obviously upset over having to now be behind Leftwich, so go out and prove what you can bring to the table in the course of the pre-season games. Show Mike Tomlin that you have what it takes to get it done, both in practice as well as in pre season game situations. Leftwich should not be difficult to unseat as a starter.
Yes, Mike Tomlin and the front office brought Leftwich back, but perhaps he named Byron the starter to ignite a fire under Dixon. Dennis, instead of voicing your displeasure through the mouth of your agent, get on the field and prove you can get it done.
Dixon brings a dimension that Leftwich does not have, mobility. A quick bootleg, a slide out of the pocket, a fake pump downfield and a quick tuck and run. These are all things that Leftwich will not provide. So Dennis quit whining and get out there, perform and force the issue to make the case to become the starter.
