Steelers Crime blotter update

The Baldwin County Georgia DA, Fred Bright announced today that Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will not be charged with rape in the nightclub situation involving a 20 year old female. During the course of the news conference, Mr. Bright said that the crime being investigated was indeed rape and a minute amount of a semen sample was found. The sample was tested positive for being human and male, however the amount was so small that even obtaining a DNA sample from Mr. Roethlisberger would have proven nothing.

Mr. Bright also said that on March 17th, 2010, his office received a letter from the alleged victim stating that she did not want to go forward with any criminal prosecution. The DA concluded by saying that his office reached the conclusion after reviewing all the evidence that proving a crime had been committed beyond a reasonable doubt was in doubt, so his office declined to move forward with charges.

Reports are out today that the league office and Roger Goodell wish to meet with Roethlisberger very soon. And given the actions taken last night with the Steelers and the trade of WR Santonio Holmes, the Steelers could impose their own suspension on Roethlisberger and let him know that he is now on a very, very short leash.

In completely unrelated news, the magistrate in Pittsburgh has dropped charges against Steelers K Jeff Reed. Yes, a kicker. He was charged with 4 separate counts. Public drunkenness, simple assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Local police had claimed that Reed interfered with their ticketing of fellow Steeler, TE Matt Spaeth, after the officers found him urinating in a parking lot. Charges were dropped and Reed has 6 weeks to complete 40 hours of community service according to a Pittsburgh newspaper.

Roethlisberger, Holmes, Reed and Spaeth. It certainly seems as if the inmates are running the asylum and perhaps Mike Tomlin has lost control of his team. There is no doubt that the Rooney family will step in, as evidenced by last nights actions, and regain control. These are actions that the Rooney’s will not tolerate.

Holmes shipped out Mike Wallace fantasy value soars

Multiple sources are reporting tonight that WR Santonio Holmes has been traded to the New York Jets in exchange for a 5th round draft pick in the upcoming draft.

Holmes was informed that the league is imposing a 4 game suspention on him at the start of the 2010 season. In a string of strange events over the past few weeks, Holmes has been the center of attention in a bad way for the Steelers organization and apparently a tipping point was reached.

The Ohio State product in 4 seasons with the Steelers caught 235 passes for 3835 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was also the Steelers MVP in the Super Bowl during the 2008 season. With Hines Ward due for a slow down in production and Holmes now in New York, look for the fantasy value of 2nd year receiver Mike Wallace to skyrocket. The Steelers draft plans as well might have just changed as well.

With all the activity in the Steelers front office regarding a quality player being shipped out for conduct unbecoming, Ben Roethlisberger had better be keeping his nose clean from here on out, the Rooneys aren’t pulling any punches. Holmes for a 5th round pick. Unbelievable.
